The Bushmen, Jefferson’s own 1960s rock ‘n roll band, will perform Sunday, Sept.9, at 2 pm at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens.
The Bushmen is being inducted in the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Sunday, Sept. 2. They’re among 31 groups and individuals being inducted over the Labor Day weekend.
The free performance in Jefferson will include excerpts from the induction concert in Arnolds Park.
The Busmen are among 31 inductees into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame this year. The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame is part of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association.
The Bushmen formed in 1964 when Jefferson high school sophomores Roger Dunlop and David Williamson started playing guitar together. They found freshman David Baller to play drums and called themselves The Impacts. They added 12-year-old Bruce (Smith) Banister playing bass, and after learning another group was playing as The Impacts, changed their name to The Bushmen.
By the summer following Dunlop’s and Williamson’s senior year, The Bushmen had performed more than 200 times in a variety of venues including the Iowa State Fair, Iowa State University, KRNT Channel 8 TV, dance halls, several Elks clubs and at many local festivals. Their last gig was at the local roller rink on July 30, 1966.
